The NBA’s investigation into the Los Angeles Clippers and Kawhi Leonard has expanded after details emerged about another endorsement agreement involving the star.
Leonard and the Clippers are already being investigated over a reported $28 million deal with Aspiration Partners Inc.
Pablo Torre has now reported that Leonard also had a multimillion-dollar sponsorship with Daktronics, the company that installed the Intuit Dome’s 4K Halo Board.
One source described the arrangement as “1,000% a way to circumvent the salary cap,” while sources claimed the Clippers funded the endorsement rather than Daktronics.
Asked about the reported agreement, a Daktronics representative said, “My understanding is Daktronics doesn’t have a deal with Kawhi right now.”
The NBA’s outside investigators have reportedly examined the Daktronics arrangement.
Clippers owner Steve Ballmer and Leonard have denied wrongdoing in the broader investigation, which has also put a planned Leonard trade to the Toronto Raptors on hold.
