Toronto Raptors star Kawhi Leonard says his motivation to continue playing basketball has little to do with money, despite recently agreeing to a two-year, $115 million contract extension.

Leonard explained that he has already earned enough throughout his NBA career to retire comfortably but remains committed to playing because of his passion for the game.

During an interview with Kate, the veteran forward discussed the importance of his new contract and what it means for his family.

Kate: “How important was it for you to sign that extension?”

Kawhi: “I thank God and the Raptors and just all the support for believing in me. Security for the family. But I never really look at the money, because I could have stopped playing today, with the money I made. I’m just fortunate enough to be healthy and able to play the game. That’s what I really want to do. I thank them for giving me the support and the finances to be able to do it. Not just playing for free, but just playing for a finance.”

The interviewer then jokingly asked whether Leonard would consider playing without compensation.

Kate: “You’re not playing for free?”

Kawhi: “No. But, the money doesn’t drive me. I want to be great regardless of what paycheck that I’m getting.”
