The Dallas Mavericks are expected to add former NBA head coach Willie Green to Dusty May’s inaugural staff, according to reporting from Marc Stein on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. The move comes as Dallas continues assembling its bench after hiring May following his NCAA championship run with Michigan.
Stein reported that Green is viewed as a leading target for Dallas while also drawing interest from the Golden State Warriors, who considered a reunion for a second stint under head coach Steve Kerr. Green’s decision is expected to be influenced by the opportunity to join May’s first NBA staff and the broader restructuring underway in Dallas.
Green brings extensive NBA experience as both a player and coach. He spent seven seasons as a player from 2003 to 2015, with stops including the Philadelphia 76ers, New Orleans Hornets, Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Clippers, and Orlando Magic.
His coaching résumé includes assistant roles with the Warriors from 2016–2019, during which he was part of multiple championship-level systems, followed by assistant stints with the Phoenix Suns and a head coaching tenure with the New Orleans Pelicans from 2021 to 2025.
Dallas’ pursuit of Green is part of a broader effort to surround first-time NBA head coach May with experienced staff. The Mavericks also have former Milwaukee Bucks head coach Adrian Griffin and Miami Heat consultant Noah LaRoche under consideration, both of whom bring distinct NBA and developmental backgrounds. LaRoche previously participated in May’s hiring process, signaling an existing professional relationship that could carry into the new coaching structure.
The staffing overhaul follows one of the franchise’s most disappointing seasons in recent years. Dallas finished 26–56 in 2025-26, ranking 12th in the Western Conference and matching New Orleans for the fourth-worst record in the conference. Despite the struggles, the organization is attempting a reset centered around rookie cornerstone Cooper Flagg, who averaged 21.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.5 assists in his debut season.
