Trae Young’s next contract with the Washington Wizards is starting to take shape, and the early projection is a three-year deal worth about $120 million, according to NBA insider Marc Stein. Young has until June 23 to decide whether to activate or bypass his $49 million player option for next season.

Stein wrote on The Stein Line that the “early projections” for Young’s new deal with Washington sit in that $120 million range, while also noting the guard is eligible for a longer extension worth nearly $160 million until June 30. That gives the Wizards and Young a narrow but important window to settle on the direction of the partnership.

The timing matters because Young arrived in Washington only midway through the season, when he was traded on Jan. 9, in a deal that sent CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert to Atlanta. He walked off the floor after giving thanks to Hawks staff and players, closing a long chapter in Atlanta before starting a new one with the Wizards.

Young’s on-court fit in Washington has already shown why the team could be willing to commit. In five games with the Wizards, he averaged 15.2 points and 6.2 assists while shooting 59.5% from the field and 42.9% from three, a tiny sample but a useful glimpse of his shot-making and playmaking alongside a young roster.

Washington’s long-term decision will likely come down to structure as much as production. Young is still one of the league’s most dangerous pick-and-roll creators, and the Wizards have spent the season building around prospects such as Alex Sarr, Bub Carrington, Tre Johnson, and Bilal Coulibaly while holding the No. 1 pick in the 2026 draft.
