New York Knicks head coach Mike Brown set the tone for Monday’s NBA Finals Game 3 against the San Antonio Spurs by emphasizing process, structure, and alignment across the organization during Sunday’s media availability.
Brown opened his press conference on a lighter note, saying, “This is a great day for me today. For the first time, I got a chance to meet Ben Stiller… I gave him a handshake and a hug. I got my man Fat Joe sitting in the back at the P. This is a great day for Mike Brown.”
When asked about expectations when he took the job, Brown framed his approach around consistent ambition, stating, “Every year I’ve coached, I’ve felt like I’ve wanted to and needed to be a part of a finals team.” He added, “It’s about trying to get the win and improve during the regular season so come postseason you’re in position to try to go for it.”
Brown also detailed his evaluation of the roster construction, explaining, “I thought the diversity in terms of the skill set on both ends of the floor, as well as the size, the length, the athleticism and all that.”
He highlighted the importance of an emotional connector on championship teams, saying, “Every team that I’ve been a part of that has gone to the finals… has an X factor or wild card.” Brown identified that presence directly: “And that person was Josh.”
Brown expanded on the role of that type of player, adding, “All those guys, they can change a game to the nth degree just with their passion, their emotion.” He continued, “Sometimes they may make you want to pull your hair out of your head like I said.”
The Knicks coach also stressed organizational alignment, stating, “You got to be aligned not just horizontally, but vertically from Mr. Dolan to Leon [Rose] to myself on down.” He continued, “And then you got to be aligned horizontally, too.”
Reflecting on Madison Square Garden, Brown recalled his first impression: “I was like, holy crap, I can’t believe this is where I’m going to be coaching.” He added, “I saw my wife and family like three rows back… it just makes it feel different than almost any other building you’ve been in.”
Brown also addressed star guard Jalen Brunson’s offensive profile, saying, “He got to a spot methodically… it always seems like he’s in control, which helps you as a coach be in control, which helps his teammates be in control.” He also noted, “My concern wasn’t Luka, my concern was Jalen,” referencing past playoff preparation.
On leadership style, Brown pushed back on the idea of ego-driven coaching narratives, stating, “Anybody that says I got us here or I, I, I is flat out lying.” He added, “You had to have help from somewhere… it definitely ain’t about just me.”
As the Knicks return to Madison Square Garden holding a 2-0 series lead, Brown’s message remained consistent and direct: “We’re just telling the truth about the staff and the players as we go along.” He concluded the competitive focus simply, saying, “It’s about trying to get the win.”
