Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson caught up with Jamahl Mosley as the Orlando Magic prepare for the final stretch of the regular season, and the coach’s message was centered on consistency. Orlando enters the week ninth in the Eastern Conference at 42-36, with four games left and the standings still tight.
“What I say to that is I’d like us to continue to rise up and keep playing better basketball; our best basketball down the stretch,” Mosley said. “We’ve got four left and the ability to get our defense lined up the way it needs to be.”
That defensive edge remains Orlando’s identity, but Mosley made clear that the offense has to stay connected too. “Offensively the ball clicking, the ball popping I think we were trying to share it,” he said. “I think it’s kind of hard to do when you’re shooting 7-of-33 [from deep] but finding a way to get the win despite that and obviously shooting 69 percent from the free-throw line.”
Mosley said the margins matter more now than at any other point in the season. “All of those little margins are going to be huge down the stretch for us,” he said, pointing to the kind of details that often separate a playoff team from a Play-In team.
The Magic have also shown they can win in different environments, which Mosley sees as a key sign of growth. “Coming off of these last wins, it’s very important for us to continue to play the right way, sharing the basketball; defensively we’re just continuing to get after it,” he said. “No matter who we’re playing, West or East, we’ve got to make sure that we’re playing our brand of basketball.”
That “brand” is built to travel. “The other part about it is that we can play both sides of it,” Mosley said. “I think offensively being able to push the pace of it as they do in the West and being able to grind the games out like we do in the East.”
Orlando’s top numbers back up the coach’s emphasis on balance. Paolo Banchero is averaging 22.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and 5.1 assists, while Desmond Bane is at 20.4 points and 4.2 assists per game.
Franz Wagner, who has played 30 games, is scoring 20.9 points a night, and Anthony Black is adding 15.3 points and 3.8 assists. Jalen Suggs is contributing 13.8 points and 5.4 assists, while Wendell Carter Jr. is giving Orlando 12.0 points and 7.5 rebounds.
Mosley also brushed off the outside chatter that comes with coaching recognition. “We have some unbelievable coaches in this league; unbelievable big-time like some of the best in the sport and in the game,” he said. When asked to name his own list, he laughed: “I can’t do that one right now. I appreciate you though.”
For the Magic, the message is clear. The defense, the ball movement and the “little margins” now have to hold up under postseason pressure.
