Jamahl Mosley pointed directly to one stretch that defined Orlando’s Game 2 loss, saying, “that momentum just changed the game,” after Detroit’s third-quarter surge flipped a tied contest into a 98-83 defeat on Wednesday night.
The Magic head coach broke down the sequence that triggered the shift, stating, “I think they came out with a little bit of a level of aggression. That first play we ran, they called an offensive foul on Dez, and from there they started picking up some heat, turned us over a couple times.”
Detroit turned a 46-46 halftime tie into a rout by outscoring Orlando 38-16 in the third quarter, a decisive run built on defense and transition execution.
Mosley said missed opportunities at the rim compounded the problem, explaining, “we missed a few shots at the rim, and that momentum just changed the game,” while adding, “being able to finish stops them from getting out with momentum.”
Orlando generated looks but failed to convert during that stretch, with the coach noting, “I think we got a lot of great looks. Shots didn’t fall. I think we had three or four at the rim in that instance.”
Detroit’s interior defense also played a role, as Mosley acknowledged, “they did a hell of a job at the rim trying to keep us out of there,” especially during a game where the Pistons consistently protected the paint.
The Magic shot just 33% from the field and were held to a season-low 83 points, a result Mosley partially attributed to physical defense and turnovers.
“That’s part of the game,” he said. “I think they did a heck of a job of reaching and grabbing and holding, turned us over a few times. They were timely turnovers, timely plays.”
Orlando’s offensive rhythm never stabilized, despite repeated paint touches, with Mosley adding, “it’d be one thing if we weren’t getting there, but we were getting downhill, and now it becomes part of the decision-making once we do get into that paint.”
The coach emphasized that Detroit’s defensive adjustments disrupted flow, saying, “they had been switching a lot of things up, cross matching, changing matchups.”
Despite the loss, Mosley highlighted his team’s approach late in the game, stating, “that’s just who we are. We’re not backing down,” even as the deficit grew.
Looking ahead to Game 3 in Orlando, he stressed the need for a response, saying, “we’ve got to make sure we keep our minds right, keep our heads right, get our recovery the way we need to.”
Mosley also pointed to the importance of matching Detroit’s physicality, adding, “when we go to Orlando, we’ve got to make sure we exceed it.”
With the series tied 1-1, adjustments will center on execution, particularly finishing at the rim and limiting transition opportunities that fueled Detroit’s decisive run.
