Desmond Bane did not take LeBron James’ recent Memphis remarks as a citywide indictment. Speaking to Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, the Orlando Magic guard kept his response direct and rooted in his years with the Grizzlies.
“I think that everybody has their opinion of the city,” Bane said. “Everybody’s entitled to their opinion. But the people who live there in Memphis and spend their time there understand how special it is. It’s just real genuine people. If you’ve been there you know.”
James had criticized the Memphis road experience and the hotel situation during a recent appearance on “Bob Does Sports,” but Bane’s answer shifted the conversation away from luxury and toward connection. For him, Memphis is defined less by amenities and more by the people who supported the franchise through the lean years.
That perspective fits the way Bane has handled his first season in Orlando. He is averaging 20.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.2 assists while shooting 48.5% from the field and 39.1% from 3-point range, giving the Magic another reliable two-way scorer next to Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner.
Bane also said Orlando is starting to hit its stride at the right time. “I think we’re headed in the right direction,” he said. “We’ve had some games that tested our character, tested our will and then other games where we haven’t had it or have had it.”
The Magic are ninth in the Eastern Conference at 42-36, and the final week will determine whether they can climb out of the Play-In line. With Bane in the lineup, Orlando has leaned on his ability to fit multiple roles and keep the offense steady when the game changes shape.
“I think that adaptability is key,” Bane said. “I think being adaptable whether I’m off the ball or on the ball or covering smaller guys or bigger guys. You try to find ways to impact winning. It looks different night to night.”
