Jayson Tatum’s return to the Boston Celtics lineup in the middle of the season has generally gone smoothly, though the six-time All-Star has acknowledged there have still been some frustrating moments as he works his way back into full rhythm.

Tim Bontemps of ESPN spoke with Celtics staff members and league insiders to gauge how close Tatum might get to his usual level of play by the time the postseason begins.

While there’s optimism about his long-term impact, there are still questions about his current form.

“I think they’re the best team in the East,” one rival assistant coach said. “I don’t think him being back helps now, but I think it will help in the playoffs.

“He just doesn’t look like he has confidence in that leg yet. (But) if you let him shoot spot-up jumpers and rhythm looks, he’ll be good.”

Tatum has played 9 seasons for the Celtics. He has averaged 23.5 points, 7.4 rebounds and 3.8 assists in 594 regular-season games.

He was selected to play in 6 All-Star games, and has won 1 NBA championship.
