The Dallas Mavericks announced they are waiving guard Tyus Jones, NBA insider Marc Stein reported Saturday. The move opens a roster spot and allows Jones to join a playoff-contending team before Sunday’s buyout deadline.

Jones, 29, was acquired by Dallas on February 5 in a three-team trade involving the Washington Wizards after a brief stint with the Charlotte Hornets. He had previously signed with the Orlando Magic in July 2025.

This season, Jones appeared in seven games for the Mavericks, averaging 3.6 points, 1.3 assists, and 15.9 minutes per game while shooting 40.7% from the field.

Over his 11-year NBA career, Jones has played 737 games with 228 starts, averaging 7.4 points, 4.3 assists, and 1.9 rebounds per contest. He has maintained a career shooting percentage of 44.2% overall and 37.2% from three-point range.

The Mavericks are exploring converting guard Ryan Nembhard to a standard contract with the open roster spot created by Jones’ release. Management is also monitoring Khris Middleton’s status before the Sunday 11:59 PM deadline.

Jones’ release ensures he remains playoff-eligible with his next team. The veteran point guard provides floor spacing and ball-handling experience that could benefit a postseason contender.

Dallas enters the final stretch of the 2025-26 season with a 21-38 record, sitting 12th in the Western Conference and outside of playoff contention.
