LeBron James could return to the Cleveland Cavaliers this summer if he agrees to a significant salary reduction, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst told ESPN Cleveland on Wednesday.
“Number one, you look at how productive he is. Assuming he’s roughly the same player next year as he is now — when his legs feel good, he’s still highly impactful,” Windhorst said, vis The Sporting News, noting James’ continued influence on both ends of the floor.
Windhorst acknowledged defensive limitations, adding, “He’s not great defensively, especially on nights when he doesn’t have it, but on nights when he does, he can still be a playmaker on both ends.”
Financial constraints would be a key factor in a reunion, with Windhorst explaining, “The only way the Cavs could add him is to get him to play at either the minimum or maybe do some moves to create flexibility with the tax mid-level exception… From the Cavs’ perspective, it’s simple. Basically, they say to LeBron: if you want to play with us, this is what we can offer.”
“If he’s able and willing to accept that, I think it’s 99%,” Windhorst added, emphasizing the likelihood of a return if James agrees to the terms.
James, 41, continues to produce at a high level with the Los Angeles Lakers this season, averaging 22.0 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 7.1 assists over 36 games.
Reflecting on his longevity, James said, “My game is not going anywhere. It’s just my body,” and noted that staying committed is key: “Once that commitment fades, then it’s a wrap.”
Cleveland already boasts a strong core of Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, James Harden, and Jarrett Allen, making the team a legitimate contender and offering James a defined role at small forward.
NBA insiders continue to speculate about a high-profile reunion, with ESPN’s Tim MacMahon adding, “I certainly don’t know what he’s going to do. I know what the rampant speculation is around the league and that is this summer there’s going to be a reunion and potentially a retirement tour for the ages back home again with the Cleveland Cavaliers next year.”
Other teams, including the Golden State Warriors and two unnamed franchises, have also been linked as potential destinations if James departs the Lakers.
