Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard addressed the blockbuster trade that sent James Harden to Cleveland in exchange for Darius Garland during Wednesday’s postgame interview at Intuit Dome.
“Darius Garland is a multiple All-Star, very talented guard, 26, probably still got a bright side to him. Pace guy that knows how to pass the ball, can shoot threes, got amazing touch,” Leonard said. “I’m going to take time with him and make sure he’s fully healthy when he gets back.”
Leonard acknowledged the difficulty of parting ways with Harden after a strong run. “It’s shocking, but this is the NBA. It’s business. He was a great teammate, spent time together, had great memories, and I wish him the best of luck with his career,” he said.
The Clippers were overwhelmed in Wednesday’s 124-89 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, who led by Donovan Mitchell’s 29 points and nine assists. Leonard cited multiple factors for the defeat, including Harden’s departure and the absence of Ivica Zubac. “You’re missing another 25-point scorer. Zu’s out tonight. Cleveland came out, played great, role players stepped in, played amazing ball. Allen played great. Donovan played amazing,” Leonard said.
Reflecting on the era of Harden, Leonard remained pragmatic. “Players come in and out all the time. It’s the NBA. I tried to help them stay, but business calls, and I respect everything that’s going on,” he said.
Leonard also addressed the challenges the trio of himself, Paul George, and Harden faced in past seasons. “You always think you got a chance to win. You need luck in this league with shots, injuries. I wanted to give another run, but it didn’t happen that way. We’re here now,” he said.
When asked about his relationship with the front office during the trade, Leonard added, “Last game it wasn’t a surprise to everybody. I was playing when I found out. I know the league, how people do business, on the hush, don’t want a lot of outside sources, especially now with social media and fake stories, so it’s understandable.”
Looking ahead, Leonard emphasized patience with Garland and the team’s adaptation to a new style. “I’ll take time with Darius, make sure he’s healthy, and figure out how he fits in our system. He’s going to bring pace, scoring, and playmaking,” Leonard said.
The Clippers (23-26) will travel to Sacramento on Friday to face the Kings, marking the first step in adjusting to Garland as their new starting point guard. Cleveland (30-21) continues its road trip Saturday against Sacramento.
