Giannis Antetokounmpo opens up amid trade uncertainty

Giannis Antetokounmpo expressed an emotional desire to spend his entire career with the Milwaukee Bucks during a pregame conversation with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Tuesday, speaking amid ongoing trade speculation while sidelined by a calf strain.

“What I want deep down in my heart is I want to be a Milwaukee Buck for the rest of my career and win here,” Antetokounmpo said.

The 31-year-old detailed his deep personal ties to Milwaukee, where he has lived for 13 years since entering the NBA at 18.

He noted that he has now spent more time in Milwaukee than in Greece and built the most meaningful memories of his life in the city.

“I’ve spent more time in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, than in my country,” the player said. “I’ve created more memories in this city than in my country.”

Antetokounmpo reflected on the milestones he reached with the Bucks, including becoming an NBA star, winning MVP awards, and capturing the 2021 championship.

He emphasized how closely his family life is connected to the city, pointing out that his father is buried in Milwaukee and his children were born there.

“My father is buried here … and people have the audacity to come tell me … ‘this guy really doesn’t love Milwaukee,’” Giannis said. “I don’t love Milwaukee?”

While reaffirming his loyalty, Antetokounmpo acknowledged frustration with the team’s direction in recent years and the urgency to maximize his remaining prime seasons.

When asked about influencing trade discussions, he responded simply: “Zero. Zero. I’m not.”

“I always listen,” he said, adding that decisions moving forward must be made with greater urgency given his championship window. After pausing, he concluded, “You gotta look.”

Antetokounmpo also recognized the realities of the NBA, admitting that while he enjoys thinking about hypothetical scenarios, commitment ultimately matters.

“If you ask me what do I really want … I want to be a Milwaukee Buck until I retire and win a championship here,” he said. “If that is not possible … then you have to weigh the other options. It’s normal.”

League insiders expect Antetokounmpo to remain with Milwaukee through the trade deadline, with any major decisions likely revisited closer to the lottery or the draft.
