Jonathan Kuminga and the Golden State Warriors once seemed on track to finally resolve their long-running, mutual interest in moving on from one another ahead of the trade deadline.
However, multiple team sources told ESPN that a deal is now considered far less likely in the wake of Jimmy Butler’s season-ending ACL tear.
Before Butler was injured, Kuminga had fallen out of the Warriors’ regular rotation despite carrying a $22.5 million salary.
That changed after Butler went down, as Kuminga was brought back into the lineup and showed flashes of his scoring ability.
His momentum was slowed last Thursday, though, when he hyperextended his left knee.
There remains a chance the player could return before the deadline and log some rotation minutes, giving the Warriors more information before deciding whether his situation extends into the offseason.
If he stays on the roster, he could also continue as part of Golden State’s rotation for the rest of the season.
The Sacramento Kings have been the most aggressive team pursuing Kuminga, but talks with Golden State have recently stalled.
The Warriors are not interested in absorbing the long-term contracts of Malik Monk or DeMar DeRozan and would instead prefer an expiring deal as part of a smaller trade framework.
