The Washington Wizards have shown a willingness to take chances on high-upside players who may need a fresh start, a strategy reflected in last summer’s trade for Cam Whitmore and this month’s deal for Trae Young.
According to Josh Robbins of The Athletic, league sources expect Washington to continue exploring similar opportunities as the trade deadline approaches.
Multiple sources told Robbins that Zion Williamson fits that mold.
While the New Orleans Pelicans have reportedly indicated Williamson won’t be traded this season, there is skepticism around the league that the former No. 1 pick is truly off the table.
Robbins notes the Wizards are unlikely to part with premium assets, such as their own first-round picks, for Williamson, though their least favorable 2026 first-rounder, likely belonging to the Oklahoma City Thunder, could hold appeal.
He stresses that such a deal remains a long shot and largely speculative.
Another player mentioned in a similar “distressed asset” category is Jonathan Kuminga, though Washington is not believed to be among his most serious suitors.
