Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick credited his team’s defensive adjustments for Tuesday’s 115-107 win over the Denver Nuggets at Ball Arena.
“By the time [Jamal Murray] had taken a shot in the second half, it was well into the fourth quarter,” Redick said. “It’s literally let’s get the ball out of his hands.”
Redick highlighted the role of attention on Murray in disrupting Denver’s rhythm. “That took him out of his rhythm. When the game started, they hit nine of 11 from three, so we were dialed on our personnel,” he said.
Luka Doncic and LeBron James led the comeback, combining for 57 points, 22 rebounds, and 18 assists. “Those guys just their patience I think has been great all season,” Redick said. “Luka in the middle of the floor making plays, pace in early offense, pace in the half court, getting paint touches, getting assists. LeBron playing out of the post has been so good with his passing.”
Defensive contributions across the roster played a key role. “Smart was awesome defensively all night. Came up with a huge charge. Vando was great, had huge contested rebounds in the fourth quarter. Jaxson going past his minutes restriction was great. Drew again was great tonight in his minutes. It was a great team win,” Redick said.
Redick addressed Deandre Ayton’s exit after a left eye injury. “He got poked in the eye. You’ll see. He looks like a pirate patch. His eye’s not in good shape, but hopefully it’s just a poke and he’ll be fine tomorrow,” he said.
The coach praised the way Doncic and James elevated their teammates. “That’s becoming a trend. They garner a lot of attention from defenses. Teams change coverages, and those guys are smart, able to adjust in real time. Smart hit some big shots. Rui got some great looks. It’s about following the right process,” Redick said.
Redick noted the team’s adjustments at halftime were decisive. “Our guys’ commitment to the adjustment at halftime was great. The work required when you put two on the ball—this is all we’re doing right now, figuring out the best way for this group to play defense,” he said.
The Lakers overcame a 16-point second-half deficit, outscoring Denver 58-36 over the final 20 minutes. Doncic’s triple-double, including 38 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists, fueled a 16-0 run that flipped the game.
Los Angeles improves to 25-16 and continues a road-heavy stretch Thursday against the Clippers. Denver falls to 29-14 as they open a three-game road trip in Washington.
