As part of the broader transaction that reshapes their roster and creates additional breathing room, the Washington Wizards are set to open up an extra roster spot once the trade is officially completed.
That newly available slot could quickly become useful as the team evaluates its internal options.
Keith Smith of Spotrac has pointed out that one logical use of the opening would be converting two-way player Tristan Vukcevic to a standard multiyear NBA contract.
Vukcevic has spent the season on a two-way deal, allowing the Wizards to keep him in the system while limiting roster commitments.
However, Washington is not under immediate pressure to make that move.
Vukcevic is still several weeks away from reaching the 50-game threshold that would force a decision, giving the front office time to be patient.
By waiting until after the trade deadline, the Wizards can maintain maximum roster flexibility, which could be valuable if another trade opportunity presents itself or if they need to take on an extra player as part of a late deal.
