Nikola Jokic exited Monday’s game against the Miami Heat after suffering a left knee injury, leaving the Denver Nuggets trailing 147-123 in Miami. Despite leaving early, Jokic still led the team with 21 points, eight assists, and five rebounds.

Dr. Brian Sutterer analyzed the injury, noting that the concern is primarily with the knee rather than the ankle. He highlighted that Jokic experienced a hyperextension, explaining, “A hyperextension is just a description for what you see in the limb… we then have to think about what structures can be injured as a result of that hyperextension.”

Sutterer emphasized the positive factors in Jokic’s situation: “We don’t see a severe amount of varus or valgus… He was not running. He wasn’t jumping and landing… We don’t see a direct impact to the knee itself. You’re seeing more down at the ankle.” He noted that these elements reduce the likelihood of catastrophic damage to the ACL or PCL.

The doctor also outlined potential outcomes of the injury: “With any of these though, you’re going to have bone bruising… That bone bruising will often keep players out for a week or two. I do think we have to be prepared for the possibility of a multiple week absence here with Jokic.” Sutterer remained cautiously optimistic, saying, “Hopefully, it’s just on the order of like 1 to 2 weeks rather than 3 to 4 or longer of something surgical.”

The injury occurred just before halftime, with the teams tied at 63. Jokic’s absence contributed to Miami outscoring Denver 47-47 in the third quarter, breaking open the game. Norman Powell led the Heat with 25 points, followed by Nikola Jovic with 22 and Jamie Jquez with 20, while Bam Adebayo returned to grab 10 rebounds.

Despite Jokic’s injury, Denver saw contributions from Jamaal Murray (20 points), Spencer Jones (16), and Tim Hardaway (16). The Nuggets, who had won the previous 11 regular-season matchups with the Heat and remained undefeated in Miami since 2018, now face Toronto on Wednesday, while Miami travels to Detroit on Thursday.
