The Celtics continue to explore the trade market for Jaylen Brown, but their asking price has left many rival teams questioning Boston’s long-term direction.
According to Brian Windhorst, the Celtics have sought trade packages in some discussions that include four or even five first-round picks, signaling a strong emphasis on future draft assets rather than immediate contributors.
“So, the Celtics have been canvassing the league looking for a package they like for Jaylen Brown,” Windhorst said on ESPN’s Get Up.
He added that Boston’s draft-heavy demands have surprised executives around the league, especially after the franchise recently attempted to acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo in what would have been a clear win-now move.
The differing approaches have created uncertainty about Boston’s plans.
A trade centered on future draft capital could suggest the organization is preparing for a partial reset rather than remaining an immediate championship contender, although Windhorst noted the Celtics themselves may still be deciding which path to take.
Boston has already made several cost-cutting moves over the past year, trading Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis while allowing Al Horford and Luke Kornet to leave in free agency amid luxury tax and second-apron concerns.
Those decisions, combined with the ongoing Brown trade discussions, have fueled league-wide speculation about the franchise’s next step despite Jayson Tatum still being in the prime of his career.
