LeBron James is approaching this year’s free agency much differently than in previous summers, with personal satisfaction reportedly taking priority over maximizing his next contract.
Unlike past offseasons, James did not enter free agency as the Lakers’ top priority, as Los Angeles first reached an agreement with Austin Reaves.
The veteran forward also isn’t expected to have teams capable of offering him a maximum contract, with league observers questioning whether any franchise will be able or willing to exceed the $15 million midlevel exception.
“I would just tell you that it’s been communicated to me that the number one thing for LeBron next season is happiness and not money,” Brian Windhorst said on the Hoop Collective podcast.
James and the Lakers have not yet met this offseason, and no formal contract offer has been presented. Reports indicate James has also not made himself available for discussions with the organization up to this point.
According to Chris Haynes, however, a meeting between both sides is expected as the Warriors continue exploring ways to pursue James.
Golden State recently gained additional financial flexibility after Draymond Green declined his $27.7 million player option, a move that could help facilitate a pursuit of James. Green and James are both represented by Rich Paul.
