Giannis Antetokounmpo and his agent, Alex Saratsis, have entered discussions with the Milwaukee Bucks about whether his long-term fit remains in Milwaukee or if a trade is the better path.
A decision is expected in the weeks leading up to the February 5 trade deadline, and the talks could ultimately result in a trade request.
Antetokounmpo has been frustrated with the Bucks’ recent struggles, and tension inside the locker room has grown.
One source told ESPN’s Shams Charania that “the writing’s on the wall on what’s to come with Giannis Antetokounmpo,” indicating that a significant shift may be looming.
His future with the franchise has been uncertain since the offseason, when he evaluated the team’s moves before deciding not to force a trade.
He did, however, identify the New York Knicks as a preferred destination, and the two teams quietly explored a deal in August before talks stalled. New York lacked tradeable first-round picks but did hold four pick swaps.
Should Antetokounmpo become available, more teams are expected to enter the race. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst has suggested he may present the Bucks with a list of preferred landing spots while Milwaukee seeks a strong return.
The player becomes eligible in 2026 for a four-year, $275 million extension and could become a free agent in 2027. If traded, he could sign the same extension six months after the move.
This season, he has averaged 30.6 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 6.4 assists across 16 games. The Bucks have struggled without him, going 1–5 in his absence.
