With Tyrese Haliburton lost for the season to a torn Achilles, the Indiana Pacers have been searching for steady point guard support.
They cycled through several veterans in preseason, then waived James Wiseman to add Mac McClung, who was eventually replaced by Monte Morris – the guard they originally hoped to bring to camp before his calf injury delayed things.
Head coach Rick Carlisle said McClung earned his shot by standing out in an October 27 workout, noting he was the most impressive of the three participants.
Jake Fischer of The Stein Line reports the other two in that session were Morris and Cody Martin, whose 10-day hardship deal expires Friday.
Martin missed Thursday’s game in Phoenix with an illness and, according to Fischer, likely won’t return unless Indiana receives another hardship exception.
Beyond free agents, the Pacers have also been scanning the trade market for backcourt help, with Fischer hearing that Jose Alvarado is a player of particular interest.
Alvarado, 27, went undrafted in 2021 after starring at Georgia Tech. He earns $4.5MM this season and holds a matching player option for 2026/27.
Through 10 games, he has averaged 6.7 points, 2.6 assists, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.0 steal in 18.9 minutes, shooting .423/.429/.800.
