Thomas Walkup is preparing for a new chapter with Dubai after ending his successful run with Olympiacos during the offseason.
Dubai will take part in the inaugural EuroLeague Super Cup in Abu Dhabi, where it is scheduled to meet Real Madrid in Friday’s second semifinal.
Ahead of the tournament, Walkup reflected on his departure from Olympiacos following a lengthy process that eventually resulted in his move to Dubai.
“Overall, I am very happy with the time I had at Olympiacos. I still think about the people there, even the fans, the management, everyone. It was like a family to me. They welcomed me with open arms. Every chapter in life must close. I have no complaints about anything. I have a lot of respect for the ownership and the club of Olympiacos.”
Despite leaving the Greek club, Walkup made clear that his relationship with the people at Olympiacos remains important. He also revealed that he personally contacted head coach Georgios Bartzokas before moving on.
“I didn’t feel the need to explain my side. Some people feel a certain way, but it’s okay. Only respect for the club. I spoke with everyone, thanked them. When something comes to an end, it doesn’t mean you forget everything you’ve been through. We had difficult and amazing moments. Those are not forgotten because a chapter closed. The players, the coaches are family to me. I called the coach and thanked him. I expressed my gratitude.”
Walkup is now focused on what Dubai can accomplish in the EuroLeague. The experienced guard believes his new team has assembled enough talent to compete for the biggest prize immediately.
“The goal is to win the title, that’s why I came here. The way the team is built is excellent. It’s the most talented team in the EuroLeague in my opinion. We are making progress every day.”
