Before Wednesday’s game, Dallas Mavericks guard Brandon Williams publicly addressed his recent arrest at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, where he was charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession.
Speaking to reporters, Williams issued an apology, expressing regret for the situation and the timing of the incident.
“I wanted to apologize, first and foremost,” Williams said. “Obviously, it’s an ongoing situation. I can’t really go further into detail about it, but I just want to apologize for being a distraction, especially at a time coming in 0-2. It wasn’t the ideal time at all, but I want to take full accountability. I want to take full responsibility and it’s time to move on now.”
According to a report from The Dallas Morning News, TSA officials discovered roughly 1.5 ounces of marijuana in a black container inside Williams’ suitcase.
Police were called, and Williams confirmed the bag was his, though he told authorities that his manager had packed it and he was unaware of its contents. The Mavericks have declined to comment on the matter.
Williams had missed the previous two games, which were initially attributed to personal reasons. It was later revealed through an Instagram post that he had recently lost a close friend and former high school teammate to leukemia.
Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd told reporters that Williams had been excused from team activities to attend the memorial service.
“Going to a funeral for a friend’s passing and having that incident, that’s something that he has to deal with and we can only be here to support him,” Kidd said.
Williams, now in his third year with the Mavericks, played a key role late last season when injuries forced him into extended minutes at point guard.
He averaged 8.3 points and 2.3 assists in 33 games, helping Dallas stay competitive and earning a standard NBA contract in April after starting on a two-way deal.
