Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia responded to a harsh preseason forecast from The Ringer, challenging the negative outlook on the team’s defense. Ishbia tweeted directly at Bill Simmons, suggesting the prediction was off-base and offering to donate to charity if the take proved correct.

The controversial prediction, written by Michael Pina, claimed the Suns would have the worst defense in the NBA this season. Pina cited last year’s poor transition defense, half-court rotations, and reliance on inexperienced big men as major concerns.

Ishbia dismissed those concerns, emphasizing that the Suns are a “different culture and different team” this year. He called out the notion of a guaranteed defensive collapse and expressed confidence in the team’s improvements under new leadership.

The Suns have undergone significant changes in the offseason, beginning with the firing of Mike Budenholzer after one disappointing season. Jordan Ott was hired as head coach, bringing a fresh defensive approach, while Brian Gregory assumed the role of general manager.

Phoenix also executed a blockbuster trade centered around Kevin Durant, acquiring Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, and multiple draft picks, while moving on from Bradley Beal via a contract buyout. These moves signal a clear shift from the previous superteam strategy.

Ishbia’s tweet reflects a broader message that the Suns are prepared to prove skeptics wrong. The team now features a roster blending veterans like Devin Booker and Dillon Brooks with emerging talents such as Khaman Maluach and Rasheer Fleming.

While critics highlight potential defensive issues with players like Mark Williams and rookie Maluach, Ishbia’s confidence suggests the organization believes in the new system. He also emphasized accountability, hinting that this season’s performance will reflect a team fully committed to the process.
