Austin Reaves addressed the Los Angeles Lakers’ continued issues in the third quarter following their 119–109 season opener loss to the Golden State Warriors.
He acknowledged the problem has persisted since he joined the team and emphasized the need for more energy after halftime.
“We’ve just been bad third quarter. Last couple of years for sure, but I think ever since I’ve been here, we’ve had a problem with the third quarter,” Reaves said. He added that the responsibility falls on the players, not the coaches.
“That’s on us players, that’s not on the coaches. They come in here and give us the answers to the test, and we just didn’t come out and execute,” Reaves explained. “So, that’s on us, and we have to be better.”
The Lakers’ struggles were evident as Golden State opened the second half with a 19–4 run, turning a tight game into a deficit the team could not overcome. Luka Doncic scored 43 points, but the deficit proved too large to erase.
Head coach JJ Redick highlighted that the third-quarter issue is more about preparation and focus than tactical adjustments. “They’re not ready to play to start the third quarter,” he said, pointing to a recurring pattern from last season.
Despite shooting 54.5 percent from the field, the Lakers struggled from deep, hitting just 25 percent, and converted 60.7 percent of free throws. Redick described turnovers and missed defensive rotations as “self-inflicted,” noting the team did enough positive things to stay in contention.
LeBron James’ absence due to sciatica also impacted the team’s rhythm. Redick mentioned moments where having James in the lineup would have helped break through defensive pressure. Meanwhile, Deandre Ayton, Marcus Smart, and Gabe Vincent assumed larger leadership roles in his absence.
Reaves’ 26-point performance was a bright spot, showing his ability to contribute under pressure. The Lakers aim to address execution, energy, and focus moving forward to avoid repeating third-quarter lapses.
Los Angeles will look to bounce back on Thursday against the Minnesota Timberwolves, while Golden State returns home to face the Denver Nuggets.
