Philadelphia 76ers star center Joel Embiid is expected to sit out back-to-back games during the 2025–26 NBA season as the team closely manages his recovery from left knee surgery.
According to NBA insider Chris Haynes on NBA TV, Embiid has shown progress in practice and appears close to full health after undergoing a surgical procedure in April. However, the Sixers intend to place the former MVP on a strict workload schedule once he returns to the floor.
Haynes reported that while Embiid could make his preseason debut against the Minnesota Timberwolves, the organization will continue exercising caution throughout the season. “They made it very clear to me. He will be on a very tight schedule. They will be cautious with him throughout the rest of the season,” Haynes said, via HoopsHype.
The decision aligns with Philadelphia’s approach last season, when Embiid did not play in consecutive games to reduce stress on his left knee. The seven-time All-Star has battled recurring knee problems over the past two years, which limited him to just 19 appearances in the 2024–25 campaign.
Before being shut down in February, Embiid averaged 23.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game. He posted his eighth career triple-double on February 4, finishing with 29 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists in a win over the Dallas Mavericks.
Despite his limited availability, the 76ers signed Embiid to a three-year, $193 million extension in September 2024, keeping him under contract through the 2028–29 season. The franchise remains committed to building around the 7-foot center and All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey.
