Joel Embiid, center for the Philadelphia 76ers, recently underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, performed by Dr. Jonathan L. Glashow at NYU Langone Sports Medicine Center.

He will be reevaluated in about six weeks. After consulting with specialists and considering various treatments before opting for surgery, Embiid had previously been sidelined for the remainder of the season on February 28 due to ongoing knee issues.

This knee is the same one Embiid had surgery on in February 2024 for a lateral meniscus injury. He returned to play in April 2024 but continued to struggle with swelling, delaying his season debut until November 12.

Despite playing 19 games this season, his performance was below his usual standards, with averages of 23.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists.

The Sixers had hoped his knee would improve, but when pain persisted, the big man chose surgery. This caused some tension between him and the franchise.

With the team out of playoff contention, Embiid’s return is expected next season. His recovery will be crucial for the Sixers’ chances of competing in the East.

Embiid is guaranteed $179 million over the next three seasons, with a $69 million player option for 2028-29.
