The Sacramento Kings have reached an agreement with Keegan Murray on a five-year, $140MM rookie contract extension, according to a report from Shams Charania of ESPN.
Murray, selected fourth overall in the 2022 NBA Draft, has averaged 13.3 points, 15.6 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in his career while shooting .451 from the field, .372 from three-point range, and .812 from the free-throw line.
He took a major step forward during his second season, posting 15.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game while also contributing defensively with a steal and nearly one block per contest.
However, his production dipped slightly in his third year with the arrival of additional scorers like DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine, which shifted some of the offensive load away from him.
Known for his shooting and potential as a strong two-way forward, Murray recently spoke about how Dennis Schroder’s defensive role will benefit him.
He said he’s excited for Schroder to take on the tougher guard matchups, which will allow him to focus on defending top wings and forwards.
He also made it clear that he’s setting high goals for himself this season, stating that he aims “to hit at least 40% of his threes” and to compete for the league’s “Most Improved Player” award.
Murray recently had surgery to repair a torn thumb ligament and is expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks while recovering.
James Ham reported on Twitter that Murray is expected to make the extension official within the next 24 to 48 hours.
ESPN’s Anthony Slater added that there are no player or team options included, meaning Murray is firmly committed to the Kings long term and now holds the franchise’s longest contract on the books.
