Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers emphasized the team will speed up its play without trying to copy other franchises. According to Eric Nehm of The Athletic, Rivers said, “We’re going to play at our pace, but we’re going to do things quicker.”

Rivers clarified that the Bucks aren’t chasing the style of teams like the Pacers. “We’re not going to be them. We’re going to be us,” he explained following the first training camp session.

The coach stressed the importance of self-identity over imitation. “Everybody spent years trying to be Golden State, and nobody was. I just think you’ve got to be the best version of yourself to win,” Rivers added.

Milwaukee is adjusting to a new roster configuration for the 2025–26 season, marking the first full campaign without Khris Middleton since 2012–13. Pat Connaughton, Brook Lopez, and Damian Lillard also won’t be on opening day, reflecting a significant roster shakeup.

Rivers wants the Bucks to capitalize on speed while maintaining their strengths as a big team. “If we were a slow, big team, I wouldn’t try to play like that,” he said. “We are changing because I think that’s how we have to play.”

The Bucks added key pieces in free agency and the draft to support a faster style. Myles Turner and Mark Sears joined the roster, while Bobby Portis, Kevin Porter Jr., and Gary Trent Jr. were re-signed to maintain continuity.

Rivers’ comments come as Milwaukee seeks to balance transition offense with defensive efficiency. The coach aims to leverage Giannis Antetokounmpo’s versatility and the supporting cast’s athleticism to push the pace.

While emphasizing quick play, Rivers insists the focus remains on identity. “Teams make a mistake when they try to be someone else,” he said, underscoring the value of playing to the Bucks’ unique strengths.
