The Golden State Warriors have locked in Al Horford to a two-year, $12 million deal, but with an important clause attached.
According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the veteran big man has a second-year player option built into the agreement, giving him control over his future beyond the 2025–26 season.
The 39-year-old is expected to step in as Golden State’s starting center. Horford is eager to chase another championship in what could be the final stretch of his NBA career.
The Warriors had been in contact with Horford for weeks, with the deal finalized once the franchise resolved roster questions surrounding free agent forward Jonathan Kuminga.
Horford spent most of the last decade with the Boston Celtics, including their 2024 championship run. Last season, he averaged 9.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists across 60 games.
In the 2025 playoffs, Horford started nine of 11 games for Boston, posting 8.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per contest while hitting 40 percent of his three-point attempts. His perimeter shooting and defensive communication remain valuable assets.
Golden State views Horford as a stabilizing presence alongside Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Jimmy Butler. His addition should reduce Green’s workload against larger frontcourt opponents during the regular season.
The Warriors are expected to carefully manage Horford’s minutes, with rest days likely in back-to-back situations. Despite his age, his skill set still fits Steve Kerr’s system, particularly as a floor spacer and high-post facilitator.
Horford previously had a brief stint in the Western Conference with the Oklahoma City Thunder and now returns to the West Coast with championship ambitions.
