Phoenix Suns co-owner Mat Ishbia said he is “not that concerned” about the NBA investigation into Kawhi Leonard’s endorsement deal with Aspiration. Ishbia cited his trust in Clippers owner Steve Ballmer, stating on NBA Today, “He says he didn’t do that and I believe him.”

The league’s probe, led by law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, is examining whether Leonard’s agreement with Aspiration constitutes salary-cap circumvention. NBA insider Jake Fischer reported that the investigation is unlikely to conclude before the All-Star Game, prolonging uncertainty for the Clippers.

The Athletic’s John Hollinger warned that if violations are confirmed, the NBA could impose severe penalties. Potential sanctions include fines up to $7.5 million for the Clippers, $350,000 for Leonard, suspensions, voided contracts, or even forfeiture of draft picks.

Leonard’s $50 million contract for next season could be voided if the league finds direct evidence of circumvention. Hollinger noted that such a sanction, while complicated, might unexpectedly provide the Clippers with financial flexibility to pursue other top-tier free agents.

Other measures under review include suspending team officials or requiring Leonard to return endorsement-related income. Clippers management maintains that all dealings complied with NBA rules, and Ballmer has denied involvement beyond his minor stake in Aspiration.

League sources indicate that the harshest penalties would only be applied if clear proof of wrongdoing emerges. For now, the resolution timeline leaves the Clippers’ roster planning and Leonard’s contract status in limbo.
