The NBA’s investigation into Kawhi Leonard’s endorsement deal with Aspiration is not expected to conclude before the All-Star Game, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer.
Fischer reported that multiple league sources anticipate the probe will stretch into the second half of the season. The delay keeps uncertainty surrounding the Los Angeles Clippers and their franchise star.
The investigation, led by the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, is examining whether Leonard’s agreement with Aspiration constitutes salary cap circumvention. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has emphasized the league’s commitment to due process as documents and financial transactions are reviewed.
In a separate report from The Athletic, John Hollinger warned that the league could take decisive action if violations are confirmed. He noted that unlike minor infractions, such as early free agency discussions, the circumstances involving Leonard are considered “beyond the pale” by league executives.
Hollinger outlined that Article XIII of the NBA rulebook provides a range of penalties. These include fines up to $7.5 million for the Clippers, $350,000 for Leonard, suspensions, forfeiture of draft picks, or voiding contracts.
Voiding Leonard’s contract, valued at more than $50 million next season, remains the most direct but complicated sanction. Hollinger cautioned that such an outcome could unexpectedly give the Clippers financial flexibility to pursue top free agents.
Other potential measures include suspending team officials or requiring Leonard to return endorsement-related funds. Clippers owner Steve Ballmer, who had a minor stake in Aspiration, has denied any involvement in the arrangement. The organization maintains its stance that all actions have complied with league rules.
While league insiders believe the harshest penalties would only be applied if direct evidence of circumvention is uncovered, Hollinger’s assessment suggests the NBA will not hesitate to act if wrongdoing is proven.
For now, Leonard’s contract status and the Clippers’ roster planning remain in limbo. The timing of the resolution could have major implications for both the franchise and the broader free agency market.
