Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga remains at the center of ongoing contract and trade speculation, but multiple reports suggest the franchise is hesitant to move on from the 22-year-old.

According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, there is “a real reluctance” from Golden State to give up on Kuminga, especially with the Sacramento Kings pushing to acquire him in a potential deal.

One factor reportedly influencing the Warriors’ approach is ownership dynamics. Sacramento’s owner Vivek Ranadivé previously worked with Golden State, and some around the league believe Warriors governor Joe Lacob is cautious about the possibility of Kuminga developing into a star with a nearby rival.

Contract talks between the Warriors and Kuminga have stalled in recent weeks. The team has offered a three-year, $75.2 million extension with a team option in the final season. Kuminga and his agent, Aaron Turner, have pushed for a player option instead, giving him greater control over his long-term future.

The standoff reflects Golden State’s desire to preserve flexibility. Structuring the deal around a team option would allow the front office to maintain control over Kuminga as a tradeable asset while avoiding the risk of being locked into a large commitment.

Kuminga’s camp has countered with alternatives, including a one-year bridge contract that would raise his 2024–25 salary above the $7.9 million qualifying offer while keeping him on track for unrestricted free agency in 2026. Lacob has resisted that idea, wary of losing him without compensation.

The Kings have shown consistent interest in Kuminga and reportedly proposed a package of Malik Monk and a protected 2030 first-round pick in a sign-and-trade scenario. Sacramento would then offer Kuminga a three-year, $63 million contract.

Golden State has so far declined to accept those terms, with the protections on the draft pick emerging as the central obstacle. Sources indicate that if the Kings were to lift those protections, discussions could advance.

Kuminga is coming off a breakout campaign, averaging 15.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game while stepping into a larger role when Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green missed time. His emergence has made him both a valuable on-court contributor and a critical trade chip.

With the October 1 qualifying offer deadline looming, the situation remains fluid. If Kuminga opts to sign the $7.9 million offer, he would secure a no-trade clause for this season but sacrifice long-term guaranteed money, setting up unrestricted free agency in 2026.
