Clippers forward Derrick Jones Jr. failed to provide his former agent, Aaron Turner, with the required 15-day written notice before terminating their agreement before signing a free-agent contract last year.
This procedural oversight played a central role in an arbitrator’s decision, which ruled that Turner was entitled to his full 4% commission – amounting to $1.2 million – on the three-year, $30 million deal Jones ultimately signed, according to Michael McCann of Sportico.
Jones testified that he personally negotiated the contract with the Clippers. Before parting ways with Turner, he had received a three-year, $27 million offer from the Dallas Mavericks, which he considered far below his expectations.
In court, Jones described his reaction to the offer as “furious,” emphasizing that it was significantly lower than the value he believed he deserved.
On June 26, 2024, Jones formally emailed Turner to terminate their Standard Player Agent Contract. Two days later, he requested that Turner waive the 15-day notice period mandated by their agreement, but Turner declined.
The arbitrator’s ruling highlighted that Jones’ failure to follow the proper notice procedure meant Turner retained the right to the full commission, despite the agent no longer representing him at the time of the Clippers deal.
