The New York Knicks are adding a familiar face ahead of training camp. Stefan Bondy of the New York Post reported that veteran wing Matt Ryan has signed a deal with the team and will join them this fall.
Ryan, 28, appeared in 19 games for New York last season, averaging 1.5 points while shooting 31.6 percent from three. He also saw action with the Westchester Knicks in the G League, where he was originally the first overall pick in the 2024 G League Draft.
The sharpshooter’s best stretch in the NBA came during the 2023–24 season with the New Orleans Pelicans. In that run, he averaged 5.4 points while connecting on 45.1 percent of his three-point attempts across 28 games.
Since entering the league in 2021, Ryan has played for multiple teams, including the Celtics, Lakers, Timberwolves, Pelicans, and Knicks. His shooting reputation has kept him in demand as teams look to bolster their perimeter threats.
New York waived Ryan in March 2025, but the front office continued monitoring his progress. According to SNY’s Ian Begley, the Knicks had Ryan on their radar as they evaluated options for their final camp roster spots.
The team has also looked at other veterans and prospects, including guard Dennis Smith Jr., who has drawn positive reviews in informal scrimmages. Big men Alex Len and Trey Jemison III are also being considered.
The Knicks’ core is anchored by Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, and Karl-Anthony Towns. While Ryan faces an uphill battle to secure a guaranteed role, his ability to space the floor could provide insurance and depth for head coach Mike Brown’s rotation.
