New Orleans Pelicans guard Jose Alvarado suffered a scare while representing Puerto Rico in the AmeriCup quarterfinals against Argentina.
During overtime, Alvarado went down hard on his tailbone while fighting for a rebound.
The 26-year-old remained on the court for several minutes in visible pain before medical staff transported him out of the arena on a stretcher, raising immediate concerns about the severity of the injury.
Fortunately, Alvarado himself offered reassurance shortly afterward.
Posting to Instagram, he wrote: “Appreciate the love, y’all. But your boy good. God got me,” signaling that the injury may not be as serious as it first appeared.
Alvarado, a four-year NBA veteran, is entering the first season of a two-year, $9 million extension, worth $4.5 million annually.
With starting point guard Dejounte Murray sidelined while recovering from a torn Achilles’ tendon, the Pelicans were already expecting Alvarado to take on an expanded role to begin the season.
Alvarado has played 4 seasons for the Pelicans. He has averaged 8.2 points, 3.1 assists, and 2.2 rebounds in 227 regular-season games.
