Although Achille Polonara is not yet ready to return to the court, the Italian forward has already found a familiar place to continue his basketball journey once he is fully recovered.
After six years away, Polonara will be rejoining Dinamo Sassari, the club where he previously played between 2017 and 2019.
The Sardinian side officially confirmed the agreement with a heartfelt announcement:
“Once conditions allow, an agreement has been reached for the return of Achille Polonara” to the white-and-blue side.
Polonara’s comeback to basketball remains uncertain after he was diagnosed with myeloid leukemia in June.
Despite this challenge, Sassari underlined its commitment to standing by the player, emphasizing the strong ties that have connected him to the club for years.
“The agreement once again seals the deep bond between Achille and Dinamo: a relationship built on mutual respect and trust that has paved the way for his return to Sardinia,” the team wrote.
The statement went further, highlighting both faith in Polonara’s recovery and his importance as a person and as a professional athlete:
“The club firmly believes in the athlete’s recovery journey and in his technical and human contribution, confident that Polonara still possesses the qualities that made him one of the most highly regarded Italian players internationally.”
For the 33-year-old, Sassari is a special place. After two seasons with the club, Polonara leaped to the EuroLeague, representing Baskonia, Fenerbahce, Anadolu Efes, Zalgiris Kaunas, and, most recently, Virtus Bologna.
Now, with the support of Dinamo Sassari, he is preparing for the possibility of one day returning to the court where his professional career blossomed.
Polonara himself expressed gratitude and deep emotion in his message:
“I am extremely happy and honored to be able to return home. I would like to thank President Stefano Sardara, CEO Francesco Sardara, general manager Jack Devecchi, and coach Massimo Bulleri for giving me this opportunity at such a delicate moment in my personal life.”
