David Vanterpool called Damian Lillard’s homecoming to Portland “the best” in a wide-ranging interview with Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson.
Vanterpool emphasized the personal side of Lillard’s move, saying the return gives the veteran “an opportunity to be around family and familiarity.”
The Wizards assistant coach praised what Portland means to Lillard off the court, noting that being close to his kids and loved ones matters to the star.
“That’s home for him,” Vanterpool told Scoop B, pointing to the comfort and support Lillard regains in Portland.
Vanterpool also referenced Lillard’s resilience after serious health setbacks, including a cleared deep vein thrombosis and a season-ending torn Achilles.
“I don’t expect anything less than that,” Vanterpool said when discussing Dame’s capacity to return and perform at an elite level.
Lillard’s official signing with Portland on July 19 — a three-year deal — reunited him with the franchise that made him a star and gives the Trail Blazers a clear leader. The move came after Milwaukee waived and stretched the remaining salary on Lillard’s prior contract earlier in July.
Vanterpool, who has coached and mentored players across the league, framed the signing as both a basketball and a human story. He suggested that, beyond Xs-and-Os, Lillard’s presence restores identity and stability to a franchise and fan base that have long cherished him.
The coach also highlighted the emotional side: Lillard’s desire to be where he feels rooted and the ripple effects that creates in a locker room. That family-first angle, Vanterpool said, can be as important to on-court performance as any schematic adjustment.
