Rui Hachimura is now eligible for a contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers, but the team is not expected to pursue a new deal before training camp opens next month, according to reporter Jovan Buha on his latest Buha’s Block podcast.
As Buha explained, “With the current intel I have, I do not expect Rui to be extended by the Lakers in the next six weeks. It’s certainly possible that something happens, but I would say most of what’s been out there is them wanting to keep the books clean and wanting to see whether he starts or whether he’s their sixth man and how the pieces fit this year.”
The 27-year-old power forward became extension-eligible when the NBA’s new calendar year began on July 6. He is currently earning an $18,259,259 expiring contract and will be an unrestricted free agent next summer if a new deal with the Lakers does not materialize.
Since being acquired from Washington in January 2023, Hachimura has proven to be a valuable contributor for L.A. He earned a full-time starting role last season, appearing in 59 games and averaging 13.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.4 assists while shooting .509/.413/.770 from the field, three-point line, and free-throw line, respectively.
Hachimura’s future with the Lakers will also hinge on the organization’s widely recognized goal of preserving cap space for the 2027 summer. Currently, Luka Doncic holds the only significant contract that extends beyond the 2026–27 season, though Jarred Vanderbilt has a $13.3 million player option that summer.
Ultimately, whether through an extension now or entering free agency next summer, L.A.’s front office will eventually have to weigh the value of locking up a versatile and proven player like Hachimura against the cost of sacrificing cap room during a summer expected to feature a historically strong free agent class.
