From October 1 through 20, the Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro will have the opportunity to sign a contract extension that could be worth as much as $149.7 million over three years.
This follows a recent trend in the NBA, where players like De’Aaron Fox and Mikal Bridges secured substantial veteran extensions – Fox signing a four-year maximum contract and Bridges inking a four-year, $150 million deal.
According to a scout who spoke with Ira Winderman of The South Florida Sun Sentinel, Herro, evaluated on his individual merits, might be considered the most valuable of these three players.
For the Miami Heat, committing to a core duo of Bam Adebayo and Herro carries both potential upside and risk.
While such a move would secure key talent, it comes with no guarantees of either immediate or long-term team success, and Herro’s defensive shortcomings could further complicate matters.
On the other hand, postponing negotiations until the following offseason could also introduce uncertainties for both the player and the franchise.
Winderman notes that by waiting, the guard would likely be in line for an even more lucrative contract, which could make reaching an agreement more difficult.
As a result, a compromise this fall may be the most practical path forward, allowing both Herro and the Heat to strike a mutually beneficial deal without pushing either side into a high-stakes gamble.
