Sebastian Telfair, the former NBA point guard once hailed as a high school basketball prodigy, is now serving time behind bars. TMZ Sports has confirmed that the 40-year-old officially began his prison sentence this week.
According to federal records, Telfair has reported to Fort Dix Federal Correctional Institution in New Jersey, a low-security facility housing over 3,000 inmates. He is expected to remain there for the next six months.
The sentence stems from a judge’s ruling earlier this summer, ordering him to serve time after violating the terms of his supervised release in connection with his healthcare fraud conviction.
Speaking to TMZ in New York City just before his incarceration, Telfair expressed frustration, calling the situation “super unfair.” He went as far as to publicly plead for a pardon from former President Donald Trump, saying, “I did too good to be sitting in anybody’s jail.”
Upon release, court documents show Telfair will face strict conditions for a two-year supervised release period.
These include abstaining from alcohol and drugs, attending an in-person personal finance course, and submitting a two-page letter to the court outlining what he learned and any changes he made to his financial habits as a result.
While it remains unclear whether a pardon is under consideration, Telfair insists he plans to use his time in prison productively.
“We definitely have got some wins coming,” he told reporters, signaling that he sees this as a temporary setback rather than the end of his journey.
