The Los Angeles Clippers have brought back guard Jason Preston on a training camp contract, according to Spotrac contributor Keith Smith.

Preston, a 6’4″ point guard, was selected by the Clippers early in the second round of the 2021 NBA Draft following a standout career at Ohio University.

His college run was highlighted by sharp playmaking, court vision, and the kind of underdog story that drew national attention. However, his transition to the NBA has been hampered by injuries and limited opportunities to consistently showcase his skills.

His professional journey has been stop-and-start from the outset. Preston missed his entire rookie year due to a right foot injury that required surgery.

He returned to the floor in the 2022/23 season, appearing in 14 games for the Clippers, but was waived before the start of the 2023/24 campaign.

Last season, Preston’s path wound through multiple teams and leagues. He initially signed a two-way contract with the Utah Jazz but was released in November after suffering a calf strain.

He then joined the Memphis Hustle, the G League affiliate of the Grizzlies, before reuniting with the Jazz in January on another two-way deal. For the remainder of the season, he bounced between the NBA roster and the Salt Lake City Stars, Utah’s G League team.

Despite this movement, he played only one G League regular season game in 2023/24.

In total, Preston has appeared in 21 NBA games with the Clippers and Jazz, averaging 2.5 points, 2.0 assists, and 1.9 rebounds per contest.

With this new deal, Preston becomes the 20th player on the Clippers’ training camp roster. If, as expected, the agreement is an Exhibit 10 contract, the 26-year-old could earn a bonus of up to $85,300 if he’s waived and then spends at least 60 days with the San Diego Clippers, the team’s G League affiliate.

This arrangement would give him a chance to further develop his game while staying within the organization’s system, potentially setting up another shot at the NBA level.
