Michael Porter Jr. has spoken publicly about the mentality that can lead some players to bet on NBA games, saying financial desperation can push individuals toward risky decisions.
Speaking in an interview on One Night with Steiny, Porter said, “Think about it if you can get all your homies rich by telling yo bet 10K on my under..this one game imma act like I got an injury and they all get a lil bag… some people come from nothing & they think like that.”
His comments come against the backdrop of a high-profile scandal involving his brother, Jontay Porter, who was banned for life from the NBA in April 2024 for violating the league’s gambling policy. The investigation revealed that Jontay placed bets on NBA games, shared confidential health information, and intentionally limited his participation to influence proposition wagers.
The NBA’s probe found that between January and March 2024, Jontay placed 13 bets totaling $54,000 using another person’s account, earning over $22,000 in winnings. The largest flagged wager was an $80,000 bet that he would underperform in a March 20 game against the Sacramento Kings. He left the game early, citing illness, which matched his prior messages to known gamblers about his intent to exit the contest.
Porter Jr., now entering his first season with the Nets after a July 8 trade from the Denver Nuggets, emphasized that for some players, personal financial history can cloud judgment.
The NBA has increased its monitoring of betting activity, partnering with major sportsbooks to flag irregular wagers. Following the Jontay Porter case, the league implemented the “Jontay Porter Rule,” which bars sportsbooks from offering under wagers on player props for those on two-way or 10-day contracts, aiming to reduce manipulation opportunities.
