Norman Powell is embracing a new chapter in Miami with a clear mindset and renewed purpose.

Speaking to SiriusXM NBA Radio, the veteran guard said he’s eager to make the most of his trade to the Heat, calling it “a clear opportunity that I’ve been fighting for.”

Powell emphasized his desire to move beyond being a high-level role player and step into a consistent focal role, something he says he’s prepared for after carrying more weight in Los Angeles last season.

“I talked about all last year about having the opportunity to be a focal point every single night,” Powell said, via HoopsHype. “Not as a high-value contributing role player, but really seeing myself and stepping into a role that I’ve always wanted.”

The 32-year-old averaged 21.8 points across 60 starts in the 2024–25 season with the Clippers, a year in which Kawhi Leonard was sidelined for part of the campaign.

His scoring average marked a career high, continuing a steady offensive trajectory since his time in Toronto and Portland.

Powell’s efficient shooting has been a key asset, with a .484 field-goal percentage and 41.8% from three last season.

Now in Miami, he’s expected to help stabilize a Heat backcourt that lacked consistent offensive punch in 2024–25.

Miami, who finished 41–41 and missed the playoffs, will look to Powell for both production and veteran leadership.

“I was able to do that last year and help carry the team and get us to the playoffs,” Powell said, reflecting on his expanded role in Los Angeles.

The Heat acquired Powell in a three-team trade on July 7 involving the Utah Jazz and Clippers.

Across 617 career games, Powell has averaged 13.2 points on 39.8% from deep.

His playoff experience includes 91 postseason appearances and a championship run with the Raptors in 2019.

In Miami, Powell sees a chance not just for minutes, but for impact.

“I’m really excited about the opportunity that’s in front of me,” he said. “It’s what I’ve been talking about.”
