The Miami Heat have now matched their longest losing streak of the season, falling for the fifth game in a row after their loss to the Spurs.
As Anthony Chiang writes for the Miami Herald reports, Miami has also struggled against stronger competition, holding a 16-26 record this season versus teams that had a winning record entering Monday.
Guard Norman Powell reflected on the team’s recurring issues in tough moments, pointing to a tendency to unravel when facing adversity.
“When the going gets tough, we let go of the rope,” guard Norman Powell said. “I think that’s what happens when we have losses like this. We get hit, get some adversity, miss some shots, and then just everybody starts worrying about what happened on offense and teams take advantage of it and keep punishing us. But yeah, when we get hit, we continue to fold.”
Although Miami has relied heavily on its defense throughout the season, Chiang highlights a concerning trend: for the first time in franchise history, the Heat have allowed 120 or more points in five consecutive games.
Frustration also appeared to surface on the sidelines, as Bam Adebayo and head coach Erik Spoelstra were seen in a heated discussion after Adebayo was taken out during the second quarter.
After the game, Adebayo made it clear that his competitive drive and desire to avoid the play-in tournament is pushing him to his limits.
“I don’t want to be in the play-in. So some of that is, yeah, he’s got to protect me from myself,” Adebayo said after. “But also i don’t want to be in the fuck*ng play-in. So every game, I’m going to try to go out there and do the best I can to carry this team and force our way out of that.”
