Marcus Morris Sr. appeared in a Florida courtroom for the first time since his weekend arrest – but the hearing didn’t go in his favor.
The 35-year-old NBA veteran has been in custody in Broward County since Sunday, accused of failing to pay a gambling debt owed to a Las Vegas casino.
At Tuesday’s hearing, Morris’ attorneys requested bond, arguing that his release would help resolve the issue more quickly. They said he was already working to repay the debt.
However, the judge denied the request, saying Morris would only be released to Nevada authorities for extradition or if the arrest warrants were dropped.
The athlete, wearing a jail jumpsuit and handcuffs, remained silent throughout. His brother, former NBA player Markieff Morris, attended the hearing to support him.
A new court date was set for late August, though Morris’s team hopes to resolve the matter sooner. He was arrested at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and booked on a charge of writing a bad check.
His agent, Yony Noy, said it involved “an outstanding marker with a casino,” calling the arrest over a debt above $1,200 “absolute insanity.”
Morris, the 14th overall pick in the 2011 draft, last played in the NBA in 2024, averaging 12.0 points and 4.4 rebounds over his 13-year career.
