Stephen Curry shared a memorable rookie moment involving a failed attempt to trash talk the late Kobe Bryant during a regular-season game at Oracle Arena.
Appearing on a recent Complex podcast, the Warriors superstar detailed the brief exchange that left a lasting impression early in his NBA career.
“It was a game at home at Oracle and they were winning,” Curry recalled, via HoopsHype. “I think they were up like six or something like that down the stretch and we were starting to do the foul game, and he was going to the line.”
Trying to get in Bryant’s head, Curry took a shot at veteran psychology.
“I just walked by him like, ‘Yo, you nervous?’” Curry said.
The reaction from the Lakers legend was immediate—and unforgettable.
“The look he gave me was one I just… has been burned into my eyes,” Curry said. “First of all, he’s like: rookie talking to me? And two, like: am I nervous? What are you talking about?”
Curry admitted he half-expected Bryant to take a page out of Michael Jordan’s book.
“I low-key expected him to do the Jordan thing—walk up there and shoot them blindfolded or close his eyes and then look at me,” Curry said. “Like rookie, this is for you.”
The two-time MVP was visibly humbled by the memory and acknowledged the silent message Bryant delivered without saying a word.
“The look he gave me said it all,” Curry continued. “It’s like, yo, you just got here. Relax.”
Curry, now regarded as one of the greatest shooters in league history, has since carved out a Hall of Fame résumé. But in that moment, the rookie quickly learned that Bryant wasn’t one to be rattled.
The five-time NBA champion was known for his unshakable focus and competitive edge, traits that defined his two-decade career with the Lakers.
