Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga remains one of the most intriguing names on the NBA’s free agent market, but his path forward is far from settled. NBA insider Michael Scotto shed light on the complexities of his situation during an appearance on Sactown Sports 1140.
Scotto emphasized that Kuminga’s next contract could hinge on a sign-and-trade deal, given how little cap space exists around the league. “If the market doesn’t dictate what he wants, ultimately, you can use that trade kicker to get back some of that money,” Scotto said, via HoopsHype, pointing to creative contract structures if cap room proves scarce.
While teams like the Sacramento Kings have been linked to the 22-year-old, Scotto noted that multiple moving parts would be necessary for such a deal to happen. “Big picture, there’s been talk about you guys in Sacramento for sure, but I also think if that’s going to happen, there’s got to be a moving of parts here,” he explained.
Scotto mentioned that potential Sacramento scenarios could involve players like Malik Monk or DeMar DeRozan in a multi-team transaction. “Whether it’s a Malik Monk to DeMar DeRozan, even if it’s not to go somewhere like a three-team deal… there’s a lot of variables,” he said.
One rumored destination, the Brooklyn Nets, seems unlikely based on Scotto’s reporting. “I know some people have mentioned Brooklyn. I don’t see that ultimately from my sources,” he clarified.
The Warriors extended Kuminga a $7.9 million qualifying offer earlier this summer, making him a restricted free agent and preserving their right to match any external offer. His breakout year — averaging 15.3 points and 4.6 rebounds — raised his value, but Golden State appears content to let the market define his worth.
Scotto added that there remains “a decent chance” Kuminga stays with the Warriors on a new deal, which could later become tradeable before February’s deadline. “You could potentially look to flip [him] going into the February trade deadline or possibly even a little bit before that,” he said.
For now, both sides are expected to meet during the Las Vegas Summer League to reassess options and determine his role for the upcoming season. With several teams monitoring the situation, the Warriors’ offseason continues to hinge on how Kuminga’s restricted free agency unfolds.
