The Los Angeles Lakers appear poised to keep Luka Doncic at the center of their future, with talks of a three-year, $165 million contract extension progressing positively. Lakers insider Jovan Buha reported on his podcast, via HoopsHype, that “everything I’ve heard behind the scenes has been positive,” despite some minor frustrations this summer.

Buha noted that Doncic was disappointed to lose Dorian Finney-Smith, one of his closest friends, in the Lakers’ roster shuffle. Still, he emphasized that the relationship between Doncic, his representatives, and the Lakers’ front office remains strong. “Management’s been happy, and everyone’s been happy,” Buha said, suggesting no major roadblocks remain.

Doncic, who arrived in Los Angeles in February through a blockbuster trade that sent Anthony Davis to Dallas, has quickly become the franchise’s top priority. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst confirmed that the Lakers are focused on finalizing Doncic’s extension as soon as he becomes eligible on August 2.

However, Buha and Windhorst both cautioned that fans should not expect Doncic to sign right away. The Slovenian star is committed to playing in EuroBasket 2025 through mid-September, which could push the signing closer to the start of the NBA season.

Buha added that the likely outcome is a shorter-term deal rather than a full max extension. “I expect Luka to sign probably the shorter term extension, three years, $165 million,” he explained, while also noting the Lakers may let him take his time and finalize the agreement closer to training camp.

The 26-year-old guard averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.5 assists last season and elevated his play in the playoffs despite battling a back injury. His performance has made him central to Los Angeles’ plans as they prepare for a post-LeBron James era.
